Logging Time on a Job

Trade2Base lets you record exactly how long each engineer spends on a job. Time logs feed into total job time, profit margin calculations, and engineer performance reporting — giving you the data you need to price future jobs accurately.

How to log time on a job

1
Open a job → click the "Time" tab

Navigate to the job you want to log time for. Inside the job, click the "Time" tab to see existing time entries and add new ones.

2
Click "Log time" → enter the engineer name, date, start time and end time (or duration)

Select the engineer from the dropdown, pick the date, then enter either a start and end time or a total duration in hours and minutes. Trade2Base calculates the duration automatically when you enter start and end times.

3
Optionally add a note

Add a note to describe what was done during that time — for example, "First fix carpentry — 4 hours". Notes are visible in the time log and can be included in job reports.

4
Save — the time entry appears in the job's time log

Click Save. The entry appears immediately in the job time log. The total time on job updates automatically and is shown at the top of the Time tab.

5
Time logs feed into the profit margin report

When an hourly cost rate is set for the engineer in Settings → Team, each time entry is costed automatically. This feeds into the profit margin report so you can see labour cost versus job revenue.

Note: Time logging is optional but recommended for any business that prices by day rate or wants to measure job profitability accurately.

Frequently asked questions

Can engineers log their own time?

Yes. Engineers with the correct role permissions can log time directly in the Trade2Base mobile app. Time entries they create sync to the job in real time.

Can I edit or delete a time entry after saving?

Yes. Open the Time tab, find the entry, and click the edit icon. You can update any field or delete the entry entirely. Deleting a time entry recalculates the job total automatically.

What if an engineer works on a job across two days?

Log a separate time entry for each day. Each entry has its own date field, so multi-day work is tracked accurately.

Where do I set an hourly cost rate for an engineer?

Go to Settings → Team, open the engineer's profile, and enter their cost rate per hour. This rate is used to calculate labour cost in the profit margin report.
